In 1973, Lena, a young and adventurous West German flight attendant played by Emma Watson, reunites with her boyfriend Daniel, a West German journalist and leftist activist played by Daniel Brühl, in Santiago, Chile. After being abducted by General Augusto Pinochet's secret police DINA, Lena joins the notorious cult Colonia Dignidad to rescue Daniel, led by Paul Schäfer, played by Michael Nyqvist, who presents himself as a charitable mission with Baptist-style tenets and punitive agrarian lifestyles. As Lena navigates the cult's brutal regime, she witnesses atrocities and eventually discovers the true nature of Colonia Dignidad as an illegal operations centre for DINA and a political prison, trafficking ring, and torture venue for dissidents.
