During World War II, Hannibal "Iowa" Lee Jr., along with fellow African-American flight cadets Billy "A-Train" Roberts, Leroy Cappy, Walter Peoples III, and Lewis Johns, travel to Tuskegee, Alabama for military flight training under Colonel Noel Rogers. Despite facing harassment and prejudice, the cadets persevere with the help of Lieutenant Glenn, a veteran pilot who flew in the Battle of Britain. The group graduates as second lieutenants but is initially relegated to ground-attack missions due to racist policies. However, after a chance encounter with enemy aircraft, they are deployed to North Africa to fly combat missions, ultimately earning recognition and respect for their bravery.
