Pearls of the Deep

"Pearls of the Deep" is a 1966 Czechoslovak anthology film directed by Jiří Menzel, Jan Němec, Evald Schorm, Věra Chytilová and Jaromil Jireš. The five segments are all based on short stories by Bohumil Hrabal, each showcasing unique vignettes that explore themes of identity, mortality, and human connection. Characterized by witty dialogue and absurd humor, the film follows a couple taking their elderly father to watch motorcycle races, two old men constructing false biographies for themselves, an eccentric painter and goat farmer sharing stories with insurance agents, guests at a wedding reception remaining oblivious to outlying misery, and a working-class boy becoming infatuated with a Roma girl.
