In Victorian England, Cedric Brown hires Nanny McPhee to care for his seven rambunctious children, who have chased away all previous nannies. Taunted by Simon and his siblings, Nanny McPhee uses mystical powers to instill discipline. The family is supported financially by their domineering and short-sighted aunt, Lady Adelaide Stitch, who threatens to take custody of one of the children unless Cedric remarries within the month. Desperate, Cedric turns to Mrs Quickly, an unpleasant widow, but her true colours are revealed at the wedding, prompting the children to suggest marrying Evangeline, their scullery maid, instead, ultimately leading to a beautiful winter wedding and the family's acceptance of Evangeline as their new stepmother.
