13 Going On 30 is a fun fish out of water tale with a fantastic lead and some entertaining moments. Jennifer Garner's performance as giddy Jenna Rink nails the excitement of a 13-year-old living with all the resources, freedom, responsibilities, and relationships of a 30-year-old. Jenna's young idealism and optimism inspire her jaded career-focused friends and peers (as well as the audience) to return to the hope and enthusiasm of their youth. The film is about a 13-year-old girl in 1987 who awakens to find herself suddenly 30 years old and living in 2004 as a fashion editor, receiving generally positive reviews from critics for its nostalgic environment and self-empowering message.
