Maria Marten, or the Murder in the Red Barn

In 1820s rural England, Sophie Stewart plays Maria Marten, a young girl tricked by Squire William Corder (Tod Slaughter) into false promises of marriage. When she becomes pregnant and disappears, local lad Carlos (Eric Portman), a gypsy who had been romantically involved with her, is blamed for the crime that ultimately leads to justice being served. The film is based on the true story of the 1827 Red Barn Murder, in which Maria Marten was killed by Corder before being buried beneath the barn floor.
