In the 1998 film adaptation of Michelle Magorian's novel, John Thaw plays Tom Oakley, a reclusive widower who takes in an evacuee named William Beech (Nick Robinson) from London and provides him with a sense of stability and love after escaping his abusive home. As William grows and heals under Tom's care, the two form a close bond, but their happiness is cut short when tragedy strikes, forcing William to confront his past and find a way to move forward with help from Tom, who ultimately adopts him as his own son.
