In 1755, Captain Ludvig Kahlen, an impoverished Danish officer of humble birth, retires after 25 years of service in the Prussian Army with a measly pension. He obtains permission from the Royal Danish Court to build a property on the barren Jutland moorland for land cultivation. Mads Mikkelsen shines as the determined pioneer Ludvig Kahlen. With the help of Johannes Eriksen's wife Ann Barbara (Amanda Collin) and a Romani girl Anmai Mus, he establishes a settlement on his estate. However, his success angers local magistrate Frederik Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg), leading to violent confrontations that ultimately cost him his title and almost his life.
