In the 1931 drama "Comradeship" (also known as Kameradschaft), German miners Wittkopp and Kasper risk their lives to rescue French miners from an underground fire and explosion in a mine on the shared edge of France and Germany. The unlikely allies face opposition from their own bosses, who hope to halt the rescue mission due to their anti-German sentiments. Characterized by its gritty realism and authentic set design, the film tells a true story based on the Courrières mine disaster in 1906, where expert teams from Paris and German miners came together to assist French miners after a coal dust explosion killed 1,099 people, including children.
