In 1928, aging and lonely millionaire Samuel Fulton decides to leave his fortune to the family of the late Millicent Blaisdell, a woman he had loved in the past. When the family rejects him at first, Roberta Blaisdell, the youngest daughter, makes him feel welcome, and he begins to influence their lives by helping Dan Stebbins, her boyfriend, escape from trouble after his soda jerk shop is raided. As the family's wealth grows, they become embroiled in a series of misadventures that ultimately lead them back to their old life.
