Gerrit de Veer (Robert de Hoog) chronicles the ill-fated 1596-1597 mission to discover the Northeast Passage to the Indies, led by Willem Barentsz and Jacob van Heemskerk. The crew gets stranded on Nova Zembla due to sea ice, fighting polar bears, hunger, and lethal temperatures as they struggle for survival in Het Behouden Huys (The Safe Home). Gerrit's relationship with Catharina Plancius (Doutzen Kroes), daughter of astronomer Petrus Plancius, is also a significant aspect of the story.
