In this epic drama, Ukrainian bishop Kiril Lakota is unexpectedly released from a Soviet gulag after 20 years and sent to the Vatican, where he becomes embroiled in a global crisis when the Pope dies suddenly. As one of the electors in the Sistine Chapel conclave, Lakota emerges as an unlikely candidate for the papacy, but with no intention of staying in Rome - he returns to the Soviet Union dressed as a simple priest to meet with Chinese Chairman Peng and Premier Kamenev in a bid to prevent nuclear war.
