In "The Captive City," a small-town newspaper editor defies threats from organized crime to expose the truth about bookmaking and Mafia involvement in Kennington, where he's based. As he investigates, Austin faces intimidation, bribery, and murder, including the suspicious death of private detective Clyde Nelson. His pursuit of justice takes him to a police station in Warren, where he finally finds refuge and enlists the help of the senatorial crime commission to bring down the corrupt city fathers and mobsters. The film is based on the experiences of Time magazine reporter Alvin M. Josephy Jr., who cowrote the screenplay with Karl Kamb.
