The Last Year of Darkness

The Last Year of Darkness is a 2023 Chinese documentary film directed by Benjamin Mullinkosson that follows the lives of queer patrons of a now-defunct nightclub called Funky Town in Chengdu. The film features Yihao as a drag queen, Kimberly as a guzheng performer struggling with depression, and Gennady as a Russian DJ exploring his sexuality, among others. Filmed over 125 nights in five years from 600 hours of footage, the documentary captures the club's vibrant nightlife and its patrons' daily lives, showcasing their struggles and triumphs in a safe space.
