In 1972, John Leary (Danny DeVito) moves his two sons to Oakland, California, after the death of his wife. He continues hosting a late-night horror show as "Al Gory," but struggles with a drinking problem and a confrontational neighbor, Norman Strick (Gary Sinise), who is an anti-social neo-Nazi. As John's son Jack navigates childhood, he faces challenges from Karen Morris, Norman, and his own anger issues after his brother Dylan is kidnapped by the same suspect. In the end, John learns to shape up, and with the help of his sons, finds a path forward.
