In 1943, India finds itself torn between a war of independence from British rule and a global conflict that rages across its borders: World War II. Amidst this chaos, a Hollywood star named Julia arrives at the Indo-Burma border to perform for troops on the insistence of her lover, Rustom "Rusi" Billimoria, a former Indian action film star. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she falls in love with Jemadar Malik, a soldier who has escaped captivity and joins forces with the Indian National Army (INA).
