Simon of the Desert

In this surreal and satirical comedy-drama, Luis Buñuel brings to life the story of 5th-century Syrian Christian saint Simeon Stylites, who lived for 36 years on top of a pillar in the middle of the desert. As Simeon ascends his pillar, he is tempted by the Devil, who disguises herself as a young girl from the future and tries to seduce him with her body. Eventually, Satan appears to him dressed as God, but Simeon sees through the ruse and rejects her. The film's final act transports Simeon to a 1960s New York City nightclub, where he finds himself in the midst of a rock band and a crowd of modern dancers, forcing him to confront the disconnect between his ascetic lifestyle and the world around him.
