A film about a small silt island in the Enguri River where an old Abkhazian man and his teenage granddaughter attempt to harvest corn amidst tensions between military conflict, ethnic differences, and the girl's sexual awakening. The grandfather builds a hut and plants corn, while the granddaughter finishes school and struggles with her body's changes as she is catcalled by Georgian soldiers who stand on the shore across from her. As the summer ends, the island starts to disintegrate, and the old man dies while trying to escape the floodwaters. A new man discovers a ragdoll belonging to the girl among the remains of the island the next spring, starting its tradition anew.
