In a small New Zealand town of the 1950s, a young girl named Elizabeth Wakefield idolizes Queen Elizabeth II and writes to her to convince her to visit Middleton, her hometown. When the Queen finally arrives, Elizabeth's life changes forever as she befriends Hira Mata, a proud Maori woman whose land is at the center of a long-standing conflict between the indigenous people and the English settlers. Through their unlikely bond, Elizabeth learns about the history of the tribe and comes to respect them, leading her to adopt their ways and challenge the status quo in her own community. The Queen's visit ultimately leads to a powerful gesture of good will and friendship between the Maori tribe and the English Crown.
