In 1942, during World War II, Wing Commander Max Vatan, a Royal Canadian Air Force pilot with intelligence duties, travels to Casablanca in Morocco to assassinate a German ambassador, posing as a married couple with a French Resistance fighter, Marianne Beauséjour, who escaped from France after her resistance group was compromised and eliminated. Their mutual affection blossoms into a sexual encounter on the day of the mission, and they escape together, eventually settling in London and having a baby girl whom they name Anna. As their marriage is put to the test by the pressures of war, Max learns that Marianne may be a German spy who stole the identity of a French Resistance fighter, forcing him to confront his suspicions and ultimately decide between loyalty and love.
