The Great Santini

The Great Santini is a 1979 American drama film written and directed by Lewis John Carlino, based on the 1976 novel by Pat Conroy about an overbearing US Marine Corps pilot and his family. It stars Robert Duvall as Bull Meechum, a demanding alpha male father who struggles to win the approval of his teenage son Ben (Michael O'Keefe), who discovers his father's true character when he stands up for his friend Toomer Smalls, a young black man who is shot by a local racist.
