In late 1940s Italy, a mother makes the difficult decision to send her son to the north, where he catches glimpses of a new life away from poverty. Against the backdrop of post-war Italy's political upheaval, the film tells the poignant story of Antonietta, an impoverished single mother who sends her son Amerigo to live with a host family as part of the treni della felicità initiative, an experiment aimed at alleviating the country's dire social and economic situation.
