Justin Kemp (Nicholas Hoult), a family man and journalist, is called for jury duty in a high-profile murder trial involving James Sythe, accused of killing his girlfriend after a barroom brawl. Faith Killebrew (Toni Collette), the prosecutor, believes she has a strong case, but defense attorney Eric Resnick (Chris Messina) raises doubts. As the trial progresses, Justin begins to question his own guilt in relation to the victim's death and eventually becomes determined to argue for Sythe's not-guilty verdict, using his own sobriety story as evidence of Sythe's capacity for change.
