In 1944, two Italian men, Attilio and Pietro, seek refuge in the remote Trentino mountain village of Vermiglio. The village is home to a one-room school run by the stern teacher Cesare Graziadei (Tommaso Ragno), who takes in the deserters with his wife Adele (Roberta Rovelli) and their large family. Lucia, the eldest daughter, falls in love with Pietro (Giuseppe De Domenico), a Sicilian man, and they marry. However, Pietro's true identity and past are revealed after he is killed by his first wife, leaving Lucia devastated.
