In 19th century America, orphaned Irish siblings Mary and Tom join a transcontinental 'Orphan Train' from New York City to California, meeting a new friend Nick who changes their lives forever along the way. With the help of Eleanor, a kind-hearted governess, they face numerous challenges as they navigate the dangers of the American wilderness. Confronting bandits and Indian tribes, Tom, Mary, and Nick must work together to survive and find each other again after being separated from the train. In the end, the trio finds a new family with their uncle Niall, who was also on one of the trains they were taken from.
