In 1919, the Chicago White Sox, considered among the greatest baseball teams ever assembled, are demoralized by their penny-pinching owner Charles Comiskey, who underpays his players and treats them with disdain. A group of gamblers convinces several players, including Eddie Cicotte and "Shoeless Joe" Jackson, to throw the World Series in exchange for money. The scheme is eventually exposed, leading to a national scandal that rocks the sport, and ultimately results in the Black Sox Scandal, where eight team members are banned from baseball for life.
