In 1963 Dublin, bus conductor Alfred Byrne (Albert Finney) struggles to balance his closeted homosexuality with societal expectations, friendship, and a passion for amateur theatre productions of Oscar Wilde's plays, particularly Salome. He navigates his sister Lily's attempts to find him a suitable partner, his own desire to perform the play, and the conservative world around him. With the help of supportive actors and friends, Alfred finds moments of acceptance and understanding as he grapples with his identity in a deeply traditional Ireland.
