Set in mountainous Sevier County, Tennessee, in the 1950s, Child of God tells the story of Lester Ballard, a dispossessed and violent man described by the narrator as "a child of God much like yourself perhaps." The film follows Ballard's disastrous attempt to exist outside the social order, as he descends into madness, crime, and degradation. With Scott Haze playing the lead role as Lester Ballard, the film explores themes of isolation, violence, and the struggles of a life left behind.
