In Northeastern Brazil, 12-year-old Maria is sold by her family to have a better life as a housemaid, only to be resold and sent to a brothel in the Amazon gold fields where she faces exploitation by Saraiva, played by Antonio Calloni. The film follows Maria's struggles and the impact of this brutal reality on those around her, including Lourenço, played by Otávio Augusto.
