In 1904, youth culture began to emerge, primarily in European countries, setting the stage for a tumultuous decade. By the end of World War II, the concept of "teenage" had been developed, and with it, a new demographic emerged. Through archival footage, personal diaries, films, and biographies, Matt Wolf's documentary brings to life the evolution of youth culture from the early twentieth century, showcasing individuals like Sophie Scholl and her anti-Nazi resistance group White Rose, Brenda Dean Paul, and the Hamburg Swing Kids, as well as American youth movements such as the flappers and Boy Scouts.
