In 1843, Charles Dickens faces financial pressures and creative block after the failures of his last three books, but finds inspiration in London's streets and a new character, Ebenezer Scrooge, who becomes the centerpiece of his latest work, A Christmas Carol. As he writes, Dickens' relationships with family and friends fray, and he struggles to reconcile the cruelty of Scrooge with the possibility of redemption. In a whirlwind of creativity, Dickens confronts his own demons, including childhood trauma and debt, but ultimately produces a masterpiece that changes the meaning of Christmas forever.
