During World War II, a rugged South Sea beachcomber named Walter Eckland is coerced into spying on planes passing over his island. His life takes an unexpected turn when he meets Frenchwoman Catherine Frenau and her seven schoolgirls, who are stranded on the island after escaping from Rabaul. As they become embroiled in their survival efforts, Eckland finds himself torn between his duty as a coast watcher and his growing affection for Catherine.
