94-year-old Eleanor Morgenstein (June Squibb) tries to rebuild her life after the death of her best friend Bessie, and moves back to New York City. There, she strikes up an unlikely friendship with 19-year-old college journalist Nina Davis (Erin Kellyman), whose grief over losing her mother is sparked by Eleanor's fabricated story of surviving the Holocaust as if it were her own. As their bond deepens, Roger Davis (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Nina's father and a news anchor, decides to broadcast Eleanor's story, leading to a ripple effect that tests the authenticity of their friendship.
