John May, a council case worker, investigates the affairs of those who die alone in South London, trying to find relatives to inherit their belongings and attend their funerals. He's tasked with the case of Billy Stoke when he's informed of his impending redundancy, but instead of packing up, John asks for extra time to investigate. As he digs deeper, he discovers Stoke had a wife and two daughters, but they seem reluctant to be involved in his funeral arrangements. Eventually, Kelly, one of Stoke's daughters, attends the funeral, showing interest in her father's final arrangements for the first time, and John finds himself smiling for the first time in the film.
