Lt. Franta Slama (Ondřej Vetchý) is a top pilot in the Czech Air Force who trains a promising young flier, Karel Vojtíšek (Kryštof Hádek). When Nazi Germany invades Czechoslovakia in 1939, they both reject authority and escape to England with other Czech exiles in the RAF. There, Franta becomes drawn to Susan (Tara Fitzgerald), a young woman whose husband is in the Navy, while Karel falls for her too, leading to a complicated love triangle. The film follows their friendship and romantic rivalry as they face aerial combat, war, and personal loss during World War II.
