Summer, 1948. 14-year-old Alan Duckworth (John Albasiny) has three wishes: lasting peace, England to win the Ashes, and to finally kiss his classmate Ann Lawton. When he's cast opposite her in a school play that requires a kiss, life seems perfect for this cricket-obsessed boy, but reality sets in as Tommy's war stories are revealed to be untrue and Miss Land navigates an unexpected romance with a colleague, all set against the backdrop of post-war England.
