Evan Birch (Guy Pearce), a family man and esteemed professor of philosophy at a distinguished college, is suspected by police Detective Malloy (Pierce Brosnan) when crucial evidence points to him as the prime suspect in the disappearance of high school student Joyce Bonner. As the investigation unfolds, Evan's past off-campus dalliances with Anna (Alexandra Shipp), a student in his class, and his marriage to Ellen (Minnie Driver), raise questions about his alibi and character.
