In a small town, an unlikely convergence brings together Sheldon Bart, a struggling con man, and Brother Bud Sanders, a charismatic faith healer, when they reunite at his revival tent. There, Sheldon falls for Arlene Stewart, a supermarket clerk who harbors a deep conviction in UFOs - a vision of which sets off a chain reaction of reactions from the townsfolk as everyone deals with their own unique ways of coping with impending doom.
