Two decades after leaving her position as an assistant at Runway magazine, Andrea "Andy" Sachs has become a respected reporter in New York City, but her entire newsroom is abruptly laid off by text message during an awards gala. Meanwhile, Miranda Priestly, Andy's old Runway boss, is under fire for publishing a puff piece about a brand that uses sweatshop labor. To improve the magazine's credibility, Irv Ravitz, the owner of Runway's parent company, Elias-Clarke, and Miranda's boss, hires Andy as the features editor without Miranda's consent, to her annoyance. As Miranda struggles to navigate modern fashion media, she must confront a new era where nobody reads print editions and the brand has been forced to adapt to online clickbait and cheaply made short-form content.
