We Were Children

The film "We Were Children" tells the true story of two residential school survivors, Lyna Hart and Glen Anaquod, whose experiences were marked by brutality, physical hardship, and the erasure of their culture. Through a combination of personal interviews and dramatic recreations, the film presents the harsh realities faced by over 100,000 First Nations children who were forced to attend government-funded schools run by Christian faiths. Lyna Hart and Glen Anaquod recount their own stories, shedding light on the Canadian Indian residential school system's assimilation program designed to "kill the Indian in the child."
