Liza Minnelli as Francine Evans and Robert De Niro as Jimmy Doyle meet on V-J Day in a New York City nightclub, where Francine is a small-time USO singer and Jimmy is a smooth-talking saxophone player. Despite their initial attraction, their relationship deepens into obsession, with Jimmy's violent behavior and selfishness causing tension.
