On the eve of the admissions cycle for New York City kindergartens, Alex and Greg Wheeler have high hopes for four-year-old Jake, whose unique qualities in dresses, fairy tales, and princesses may be their ticket to standing out. As they navigate their roles as parents, a rift grows between them, forcing them to confront their own concerns about what's best for Jake and each other. The film poses some truly interesting possibilities on the subject of gender identity in childhood, but its cautious approach leaves it feeling somewhat inconsequential.
