In the Southern Gothic drama "The River", a hardworking Tennessee farming couple, Tom and Mae Garvey, battle violent floods and greedy land developers to save their family farm. As they face dwindling crop prices, loan rejections, and the threat of foreclosure, Tom takes on work as a scab at a steel mill to preserve his property, unknowingly sparking confrontations with striking millworkers. The film, directed by Mark Rydell and starring Sissy Spacek and Mel Gibson, is set in the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians countryside where farm families struggle to hold on to their land amidst economic downturns and natural disasters. Against this backdrop of rural despair, Tom and Mae's determination to protect their family's legacy becomes a beacon of hope.
