King of Hearts

Alan Bates as Charles Plumpick, Geneviève Bujold as Coquelicot, and a group of cheerful lunatics escape the asylum and take over a small French town near the end of World War I. The locals are unaware that a lone Scottish soldier, Charles Plumpick, has been dispatched to defuse a bomb wired by the retreating Germans. As Plumpick tries to figure out the meaning of a cryptic phrase, he is mistaken for an explosives expert and must navigate the surreal and playful world of the asylum inmates, who crown him the "King of Hearts" with elaborate pageantry.
