In 18th century feudal Japan, young samurai Aoki Sozaemon (Junichi Okada) is sent to avenge his father's death in a poor district of Edo. He lives among the slum dwellers, teaching children and falling for a young widow named Osae (Rie Miyazawa). As he searches for his intended victim, Soza must choose between following the samurai code or finding peace and reconciliation.
