A 1975 Mandarin-language Hong Kong martial arts comedy film, The Spiritual Boxer is directed by Lau Kar-leung in his directorial debut. Hsiao Chien, a con artist vagabond, uses kung fu skills and parlor tricks to convince superstitious villagers that he can use his body as a vessel for angry gods. When the villagers are threatened by a hostile force, Chien must learn to use his skills to protect the innocent, showcasing a blend of martial arts and comedy previously unseen in the genre.
