In 1938, George Hogg (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), a young British journalist from Hertfordshire, sneaks into Nanjing, China, to witness and photograph the atrocities committed by Japanese soldiers. After being captured, he is saved by Chen Hansheng (Chow Yun-fat), a Chinese communist resistance fighter. With the help of Australian nurse Lee Pearson (Radha Mitchell), Hogg finds refuge at an orphanage housing 56 young boys and only an aged grandmother to care for them. As he takes their care seriously, Hogg gains their respect and helps them grow a vegetable garden, leading to a perilous journey across the snow-bound mountains to safety on the edge of the Mongolian desert in 1945, where he eventually dies of tetanus.
