Bill Murray plays Bob Wiley, a neurotic patient who follows his egotistical psychotherapist Dr. Leo Marvin (Richard Dreyfuss) on vacation to Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire. There, Bob befriends the members of Leo's family, including his wife Fay, teenage daughter Anna, and young son Siggy, whom everyone loves despite Bob's constant neediness and phobias. As Bob overcomes various fears and becomes a part of the family, Dr. Marvin loses his professional composure, leading to a series of humorous and chaotic events that ultimately result in the patient's continued presence being both welcomed and feared by the Marvins.
