In the midst of the chaotic Mariel boatlift, a chance encounter between two Cuban refugees sparks an unlikely alliance as Juan Raúl Pérez and Dorita Evita Perez pretend to be a married couple to stay in America. As they navigate their way through the immigration system, they begin to fall for each other - just as Juan's estranged wife Carmela reappears after 20 years of separation, threatening to upend their fragile new relationship.
