In post-WWII Berlin, cabaret singer Nelly Lenz returns to her ruined city, her face scarred by a bullet wound she survived at Auschwitz concentration camp. Disfigured and without recognition from her former husband Johnny, who now bears an uncanny resemblance to her, Nelly agrees to impersonate him to claim his wife's inheritance. As Esther, she becomes a performer of her former self, but beneath the disguise, Nelly grapples with Johnny's betrayal and the traumas of her past, ultimately forced to confront the guilt that has haunted them both.
